Rep. Elise Stefanik, Liz Cheney’s Successor
Elise Stefanik is a Republican congresswoman from New York and House Republican Conference Chair. She is rumored to be one of the top contenders for Donald Trump’s running mate if he chooses to run in 2024. Stefanik replaced Liz Cheney as the House Republican Conference Chair in 2021. She was touted as the America First choice over the neocon Cheney. But in fact, she’s virtually the same as Cheney. Like Cheney, Stefanik is a swamp monster who supports more immigration, more war, and other America Last policies.
Cheney is infamous for her unrelenting attacks on Trump. This is why she should have lost her position in the GOP and her seat in Congress. But her replacement also has a history of attacking Trump. Stefanik frequently lambasted Trump for his America First stances on immigration, foreign policy, and trade. It wasn’t until she decided to become a Trump defender during his 2019 impeachment that she suddenly muted her criticism.
Cheney has never seen a war that she did not want America to intervene in. The same is true for Stefanik, who has advocated for aggressive American involvement in Syria, Iran, Ukraine, and Afghanistan. Like Cheney, she believes America is obligated to play the world’s policeman.
Cheney supported unrestricted free trade that sends American manufacturing and jobs overseas. Stefanik shares this enthusiasm.
On the issue of immigration, Stefanik may be worse than Cheney. Stefanik supported a wide variety of amnesties for illegal immigrants and consistently advocated for more immigration to replace American workers. Cheney voted no on some of the immigration sellouts Stefanik supported.
The only real difference between the two is public support of Trump. Cheney’s open criticism of Trump resulted in her removal from the party. Stefanik’s defense of Trump has made her a leader in the party and a strong contender to be Trump’s running mate in 2024. But when it comes to policies, Cheney and Stefanik are two sides of the same America Last coin.
